ImmunoLytics Mold Plate Tests
Discussed by Michael Schrantz, CIEC, CMI, BPI-BA/EP, and Scott Forsgren, FDN-P
These plates from Immunolytics can be a great first DIY step to testing. Mold affects everybody at different levels. For our sensitive population I score plates based on the following:
1 or more counts of these on a mold plate indicate a problem:
- Mucor
- Stachybotrys (rarely shows on mold plates)
2 or more counts of these on a mold plate indicate a problem:
- Aspergillus
- Fusarium
- Penicillium
- Alternaria
- Also, 1 count of a combo of the above on a mold plate indicate a problem (ie. 1 Aspergillus + 1 Penicillium)
- High levels of bacteria (>10-15) also indicate a problem

Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) Test

Keystone Portable Dehumidifier
Discussed by Michael Schrantz, CIEC, CMI, BPI-BA/EP
Dehumidifiers can be a great way to help keep indoor mold at bay! But they need to be maintained to stay mold free. Follow these simple guides to helping your home be healthy:
- Keep humidity below 50%
- 40% -45% is the target
- Below 40% increases viral growth
- If humidity stays about 50% or higher for more than 24 hours, you need dehumidifiers
- You can install your dehumidifier to empty directly into a drain or you can empty the bucket regularly yourself.
- If you set the dehumidifier up to drain automatically, then pour 12% Hydrogen Peroxide down the drain once a week.
- If you are using the bucket, you have to clean it thoroughly with soap and water, and then rinse with 12% Hydrogen Peroxide every week. If the hydrogen peroxide bubbles, you have bacteria and/or mold buildup in the bucket.

Mold Inspectors
We have had clients with good experiences with the mold inspectors below, however we can’t personally vouch for every person. Please do your own research. To avoid wasting a lot of money, it’s absolutely critical to be sure your mold remediation plan includes remediating the source of the mold. While fogging or enzyme products can be helpful as a part of a full mold remediation to improve air quality, beware of any company that says they can remove mold primarily with these products.
